Information Technology

The Trident Foundation is committed to the use of advanced Information Technology in providing services to its clients, wherever they may be.

Rapid development in the areas of telecommunications and human-computer interaction are causing pivotal changes in the way in how, what and who receives particular kinds of services. You can gain access to our variety of services without needing to leave the comfort and safety of your home. We will communicate with you through and by virtual means. Additionally, if requested, where resources are available, our members can meet with you face-to-face. We will conduct workshops where and when required. Human history has been marked by various ages, such as the:

  • stone age
  • bronze age
  • iron age
  • industrial age --
  • and now the information age.

This age will lead to the way in which we as a society define ourselves and our remembered by others.

The internet is simply a bank of information networks that exist throughout the world. The history of the Internet is that it is considered to have first developed by the U.S. Department of Defence's Advanced Research Projects Agency in the 1960's as a byproduct of the arms race. This earlier form of the internet was called ARPANET and only included thousands of computers. In 1986, due to demand, another backbone was eventually developed for the net. This backbone was called the NFSNET and it allowed researchers at Universities and other businesses to access the internet. In the late 1980's, in the quest for development, the US Congress passed the High Performance Computing Act and accordingly elementary schools, physicians practicing in rural areas and libraries were able to access the Internet. In 1993 the National Science Foundation allowed such companies as AT&T, IBM and Sprint to become managers of the Internet. As the potential of the net increased, the cost of information dissemination decreased. In 1995, it was estimated that over 15 million people were accessing the net and the growth rate was ten percent per month.

The Trident Foundation offers mixed mode (including both online and face-to-face) services to assist us in overcoming barriers relating to time and space when providing quality services. We place the onus on training and education as a tool for individual, family, group, organisational and community development.

What is Distant Training and Education?

The University of Idaho (1995) states that:

"At its most basic level, distance education takes place when a teacher and student(s) are separated by physical distance, and technology (i.e. voice, video, data and print), often in concert with face-to-face communication, is used to bridge the gap." (p1)

Some Technology Types

Technology may include audiovisual conferencing, on-line dialogue, CD-ROMS (the perusal of which is controlled by the learner), computer programmes, and the World Wide Web.

Services will be supplemented by electronic conferencing, microcomputer, interactive video, CD-ROM, and/or the Internet. The possible benefits of electronic conferencing, interactive video, and CD-ROM are the development of dialogue and a sense of belonging. The benefits of interactive video are that the technology can be integrated into programmes and services with minimum adjustment to existing learning structures and can support two-way video and audio communication thus limiting the "tyranny of distance". The University of Idaho (1995, p.2) suggests that instructional video include slides, movies, videotape and synchronous moving images together with one- or two-way video with two-way audio. Further, the University of Idaho (1995b, p. 2) refers to the computer as being a multimedia tool with the capability of producing graphics, audiovisual and print as an integrated tool. The use of technology is likely to lead to enhanced learning and supportive environments for understanding about the principles of relationship building and life skills development.
